WHICH LIFE INSURANCE PLAN TO CHOOSE AS PROTECTION AGAINST CRITICAL ILLNESS INCLUDING CANCER?

As soon as symptoms of a disease begin to affect you, your expenses will also skyrocket. The cost of medications, hospitalization, ambulance fees, medical aids like crutches, etc. will take a toll on your budget.

On the other hand, you don’t have a steady income because the doctor has ordered you to rest for an indeterminate period.

Without work, bills can pile up. What other solution is available aside from using your RRSP or your savings?

There are life insurance solutions for this kind of situation:

  • Critical illness insurance
  • Disability insurance (also called salary insurance)
  • Cancer insurance

During your lifetime, there will come a time when your finances will suffer due to unstable income. Although an insurance plan cannot prevent illness, it can counter the negative effects on our finances when we are victims of an accident or we develop an illness.

Nobody should take their health for granted!

By obtaining the ideal protection for you, providing compensation for your loss of livelihood, you can then concentrate on your recovery.

Well-chosen insurance (cancer, disability, or critical illness) can compensate for unforeseen expenses if :

  • Your employer does not provide group insurance.
  • Government programs are inadequate for your expenses.
  • You can no longer pay for your mortgage, rent, and other essential services (food, electricity, gas)

If you own a business, do not forget to calculate with your insurance policy :

  • Maintenance costs.
  • Expenses related to the replacement of a key person.
  • The amount needed to buy back the shares of a partner.

Critical illness and cancer: what is covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ)?

Usually, the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec will cover all medical expenses related to your cancer treatment or serious illness.

By turning to an insurance policy in the private sector, you can take advantage of an essential financial cushion to compensate for the loss of your income and to improve the quality of your life.

To better understand the scope of medical expenses including hospitalization covered by RAMQ, refer to the limits enumerated below:

  • A waiting period over several months to have access to medical specialists such as dermatologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists, etc.
  • A specified list of places to obtain covered services (public hospitals or participating doctors).
  • A delay of 3 months (called a waiting period) for newly-arrived immigrants.
  • Medical profiles which are not covered.
  • Certain optometric or dental services are not totally reimbursed.
  • You must pay immediately for some services and amenities.
  • Strict timelines constrain you to deadlines.
  • The deductible is paid every month from your 18th to your 65th birthday.

Why do so many people choose private health insurance?

After learning of the shortcomings of the public health plan, you will understand why so many people choose private health insurance.

  • Have access to healthcare if they travel abroad.
  • Access to private clinics and doctors operating outside the public system.
  • Benefit from a long list of covered medications.
  • Ambulance costs.

When you want to improve your existing coverage to add some aspects related to cancer or other critical illnesses, consider critical illness insurance which is offered by many different insurance companies in Quebec.

In order to take into account the astronomical fees related to a life-altering condition, note that this protection is often supplementary to your disability insurance or life insurance.

Its reasonable cost will not have a negative effect on your budget and will be well worth the price.

Note that cancer affects + 30% of Canadians.

These services are covered by a majority of plans:

  • Modifications made to your vehicle.
  • Home care.
  • Reimbursable expenses.

Critical illness or cancer insurance: who will you buy it for?

Before you even think about taking out a critical illness or cancer insurance, it is imperative to consider who will be your beneficiary.

Will you be the insured or do you want this protection for a loved one?

If the second option suits you more, in industry jargon, you are the « owner» whereas your loved one becomes the « insured ».

You will need to obtain the written consent of the insured, unless he is on this list:

  • A child (yours or your spouse’s).
  • A parent (your mother or father).
  • A spouse.
  • Grandparents (your grandmother or grandfather).
  • A grandchild (yours or your spouse’s).
  • An employee.
  • A loved one who supports you or raised you.
  • A long-time friend.
  • A business partner.

Who will receive the amount of critical illness insurance (or cancer)?

Determine who will be the beneficiaries of this protection. A beneficiary is a person who will cash in the amount of insurance at the time of diagnosis of cancer or a critical condition.

There is nothing to stop you from your choices: decide who is the beneficiary that you wish. Add to this list your future son or daughter, even if you are not pregnant yet.

The only requirement (insurance companies): they prefer that the beneficiary is related to the insured (parent, friend, etc.).

In the event that no name appears on this portion of the agreement, the subscriber receives the sum insured. If he dies, his estate will benefit.

Do you wish to change the beneficiary of your cancer or critical illness insurance?

Generally, you can change the beneficiary of your contract.  Just inform the insurance company in writing.

Nevertheless, there are 2 circumstances that will require you to have the written consent of the beneficiary (mentioned in the contract)  to make the change:

  • If your beneficiary has the word « irrevocable » next to this name, or
  • If your beneficiary is your spouse (unless it is stated that it is « revocable » beside his name).

What are the procedures for receiving the amount of cancer insurance, critical illness, or salary insurance?

How to receive the amount insured for cancer or critical illness insurance? To be entitled to the benefit, the beneficiary must :

  • Within 30 days from the diagnosis or accident, inform the insurance company;
  • Within 90 days of the diagnosis or accident, send all the pertinent information about his condition. Usually, the medical records will be sufficient.

Please check your contract if you have a longer period to send the supporting documents.

Note that the insurance company for critical illness or cancer insurance will have 60 days (2 months) to pay the amount after receipt of the documents.

However, if you contact the insurer for your disability insurance, (regarding an accident that prevents you from returning to your employment, the insurance company will pay the amount insured:

  • One month (30 days) after receipt of the proof of the accident;
  • Or if the agreement has a waiting period (a certain number of days before the first payment becomes due) that is your waiting period + one month.

To discover all the implications of your cancer insurance, critical illness or disability, refer to your contract. If you do not have a copy, call your insurer for more information.

How can you lose your critical illness or cancer insurance coverage?

To avoid losing your cancer insurance or critical illness insurance (or disability), always pay for your premiums.

In general, your contract ends at a pre-established date with your insurer.

However, it will also cease if your premiums are not paid 2 weeks (15 days) after your insurance company provides you with a collection notice.
